Yeah, neither do I.
I thought maybe I’d start posting Orneryboy strips here on Tumblr once in a while. This is strip #500, which ran on Monday, and which sickonsin wrote the script for. There’s Flash animation in it, so click to view it on the website in order to see it!
In case any of you only know me only through the crappy photos and angsty posts I make here on Tumblr, I’m also a failed webcomic artist! That’s right, for almost 10 years I’ve been publishing a comic called Orneryboy, andjust yesterday, I finally published my 500th strip.
What is my comic about, you ask? Well, it’s about a bitter, angry guy and his perky, happy girlfriend, who live in a spooky old house in suburbia with their cats. Oh, and a zombie! I like to describe it as sort of a domestic romantic comedy, set against a backdrop of slapstick horror. It’s an odd mix of my own interests, so it’s geeky, gothy, grouchy, and gory. Sometimes all at the same time!
But don’t take my word for it! You should totally click that picture and go to the website, and see for yourself if it’s something you would be into! And if you’re already a fan, thank you for reading, and here’s hoping I reach my 1000th strip someday. :)
I happened upon this strip while skimming through the Orneryboy archives just now, and I must say, this is probably one of the ickiest comics I’ve ever made. SO gross.
While perusing images on my computer, I came across a photo of myself that was taken during my brief stint at art college, oh so many years ago… Then I recalled an exchange that took place in the comments on the Orneryboy Facebook page. I had mentioned that teenage Orneryboy’s hair was based on my own hair as a teenager, and people were all like PICS OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN.
Well, it DID happen. :)
I posted a new Orneryboy comic today, the first one in about 3 months. I needed to give myself an ultimatum - to create another comic, to see if I still enjoyed doing this. And you know, I really do. I still have lots of stories I want to tell about these characters. Even if nobody’s listening by the time I get around to telling them all.
If you’re already an Orneryboy reader, thank you for sticking around. And if you’re not, please check it out! You’ll either love it or you’ll hate it. Personally, I tend to vacillate wildly between the two extremes.
This right here is why I make my comics on the computer. I scribble just enough in my book to get the basic idea down. No dialogue yet, only punctuation to convey emotion.
Where all Orneryboy comics begin… On the sofa with my sketchbook, a pencil and eraser, and my iPad for checking the archives. Not pictured: Self-doubt.
